Jesus Christ

Jesus. What a name. It flows off the lips with such a fluid movement not allowing the person to get it wrong. Say it with me, J-E-S-U-S. And please don't ask WWJD, because if you have to ask, you already have your answer.

Who exactly is Jesus?

Wasn't he the Nazarene people have asked? Wasn't his father a carpenter? The answer two those two questions would be yes, and no.

Let's look.

"But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.  "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."  Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:  " BEHOLD , THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON , AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL ," which translated means, " GOD WITH US ."  And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,  but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus." Matt 1:20-25 (NASB)

Here we are told that Jesus the Nazarene isn't just a normal baby, but being born in Mary's womb by the Holy Spirit, or otherwise known as the Holy Ghost, 3rd person of the Trinity to the virgin Mary, and will be the savior of the world.

Think about it this way.

The Creator, the Eternal God, coming down to earth, putting himself into a woman's womb, and in the process, being created. The Creator, being created! Emptying himself out of heaven, and coming down to this dark sphere called earth. When he was born, he relied on his earthly mother to take care of him, and his earthly father raising him. He had 10 toes, 10 fingers, 2 eyes, 2 ears, a nose and a mouth. God became man. Think about that for a moment. This was THE historic moment in human history! God became man, to save his people, only because he loved us. This should be a sobering thought for many of you. Lets continue.

Jesus is said to be the Christ (Christ means Anointed, which translated to the Greek is Messiah. The Christ is also the same person as the "seed of the woman" in Gen. 3:15, and the "seed of Abraham" in Gen.22:18, these are only two examples) by two Prophets and a Prophetess in Luke. First by a man named Simeaon who was filled with the Spirit (which designated him a prophet) as Jesus was being presented in the Temple.

"And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.  And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law,  then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,  "Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace,
According to Your word;  For my eyes have seen Your salvation,  Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,  A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES ,
And the glory of Your people Israel." Luke 2:25-32 (NASB)

Now for the Prophetess Anna,

"Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem." Luke 2:38 (NIV)

And now for John the Baptist, who was Jesus's forerunner,

"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" John 1:29, "I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."John 1:34 (NIV)

The amount of scripture is overwhelming to the truth who Jesus Christ is. Let me quote from the Athanasian Creed on the subject of who Christ is.

"Perfect God and perfect man, of a reasonable soul and flesh subsiding, Who although he be God and man, yet he is not two; but one Christ: one, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh; but by taking the manhood into God; one altogether, not by confusion, but by unity of person; for as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ."

Jesus Christ is both fully human, and fully God at the exact same time, for the rest of eternity.

This is who Jesus is. He is eternal, everlasting, and God in the fullest sense of the word.

Consolation of Israel - A common phrase for the Messiah, who was to be the everlasting consolation of the Israel of God.

Redemption - The purchase back of something that had been lost, by the payment of a ransom.
